Apple MacBook Pro M4 review: the Pro for everyone
Main Post: Apple MacBook Pro M4 review: the Pro for everyone
Top Comment: Apple Silicon being so successful and the chips being so powerful and efficient still has most of this sub so salty. Zero percent of this thread is about the hardware, it’s 99% taking issue with the title of the article and complaining about pricing, even though any truly comparable Windows machine is going to be in the same ballpark. It’s always a chorus of people that are completely uninterested in ever trying a Mac because they grew up with memes about Apple buttplugs and only care about videogames nit picking anything they can instead of appreciating that, like it or not, Apple has actually innovated with a truly successful transition away from x86 and has forced the PC industry to chase after them. Qualcomm and Nvidia/Mediatek are working on ARM parts for PC because of Apple. MS is taking their third run at Windows for ARM because Apple has done what they failed at. It’s good for everyone.
I just got an upgrade for a pixel 9 pro from a 7 pro for free. I'm pretty jazzed.
Main Post:
I was not planning on upgrading this year, but it was a 22 dollar/month tab to get the 9 pro with my provider and I ended up bundling my streaming services which saved me about 22 bucks/ month compared to what I am paying for those services now, plus I'm getting more data. I'm in Canada BTW.
So I got a new phone, more data, and saved 2 dollars a month. These days, this feels like a huge win.

Enjoy the upgrade :) are you liking it?
Should I get the M4 Pro or M4 Max MacBook Pro for video editing?
Main Post:
Hi everyone, I’m about to upgrade my 2020 MacBook Pro 13” Intel TouchBar 16GB but need help deciding between the M4 Pro or Max chip. Definitely want the 14”
I currently use iMovie to edit 4K YouTube videos and my MacBook gets really hot and the fans kick on and it lags. I’m switching over to Final Cut Pro when I get the new MacBook.
My current MacBook also gets pretty hot when I have multiple safari and chrome windows open. The fans kick on when I screencast to my TV with all of these windows open and a YouTube video playing.
Should I go for the M4 Pro or Max chip given my use cases?
If I go for the M4 Pro, should I upgrade the Unified Memory to 48GB?
Options:
- $2,199 M4 Pro (12CPU, 16GPU, 24GB)
- $2,599 M4 Pro (12CPU, 16GPU, 48GB)
- $2,799 M4 Pro (14CPU, 20GPU, 48GB)
- $3,199 M4 Max (14CPU, 32GPU, 36GB)
All 1TB
Are all of these more than enough for Final Cut Pro? Or even Adobe Premiere? Or best to lean towards the last 2 options?
Top Comment: They would all be a revelation compared to that Intel MacBook you have. I went from the 2020 13” i7 to an M3 Max (1TB, 36GB) last year and it was honest to god the best computer upgrade I’ve ever made. I would suggest you buy the best configuration you can afford. IMHO, the M4 Max config you have listed is going to be a slam dunk. I would take the hit on the RAM in lieu of better overall processing power.
M4 vs M4 pro for casual user
Main Post:
Hi,
I'm getting a new machine from my workplace. Nothing goes out of my pocket (poor me). Planning on the 14" MBP. Should I go with M4 24GB or M4-pro 24GB?
I will use this computer mainly for casual web browsing (many many tabs), office work, studying and reading PDFs and so.. no 3D rendering/video editing here. Casual gaming in my free time but nothing demanding since I already have a gaming PC.
I'm not sure the M4-pro is better for me, even though I know it is more powerful and considered "the better deal" or bang for the buck. It has a weaker battery on paper and in every other comparison test I've seen, and I don't think I'll take any advantage of it. Or is there any chance I will feel the difference and benefits of the M4-pro in those many years I'm planning to keep it (at least 5-8)?
I just feel like choosing the possible better future performance with weaker battery since day 1 isn't the better option than the base M4 with better battery life.
what do u guys think?
Top Comment: Once you go for 24GB (and I imagine 1TB?), you're talking about 10% extra to get the M4 Pro. I would go for that because you get a lot more bang for whomever's money. You get more performance cores and more GPU cores, both of which you're probably not going to be using NOW, but you will be surprised at what the difference those make for Mac gaming. You get twice the memory bandwidth (again, something you won't notice NOW). You also get TB 5 which you'll probably NEVER use. And you lose a few minutes of battery time. The rationale for the PRO - keeps doors open, should your workflow change considerably. Advantage of the Base M4 - cheaper. But if you go cheap, go all the way and save some more as you're probably not needing the 24 GB anyway. :) But if your "techiness" involves playing with ML, docker, kubernetes, virtual machines (all on your Mac), then the Pro may make sense. TL;DR: If you can get a new one should your workflow increase in the next couple years, go M4 Base w/ 16 GB. If it's easier to get a better machine now, go M4 Pro.
